8/28/19 Lake Hood Update

August 28, 2019

Dear Lake Hood Cadets & Parents,

As usual, we have a lot of really interesting activities coming up:

Fri 8/30/19 Bowling:   Please bring $15 cash for bowling & pizza.  We will meet at Ardaiz Circle, the little cul-de-sac near the Merrill Field tower, at 5:30 pm. Parents please pick up your cadets at 8:30 pm.  We will be going to Polar Bowl, the bowling alley on JBER. Wear civilian attire--make sure you're representing CAP appropriately : -)

Sat 8/31/19 Gliders: Glider orientation flights at Birchwood Airport 9am-3pm.  When you're not flying, you will be training for wing running, wing running, and doing other activities to work toward promotions and ratings. Uniform is ABUs.  Also bring rain gear, a healthy lunch, water bottle, tennis shoes (in addition to your ABU boots). Make sure you know your eservices password or the last 4 digits of your social security number.

Sun 9/1/19: Registration for Oregon Advanced Training Squadron & Encampment opens.  See below.

Tue 9/3/19 Weekly Meeting: We will be joining Polaris Squadron for our Emergency Services meeting at Eagle River High School 6:20-9pm.  If you would like a ride to Eagle River High School, meet at Ardaiz Circle (the little cul-de-sac near the Merrill Field Tower) by 6pm.  We will take any cadets who are there by 6pm.  Uniform is ABUs.  If you have a 24-hour pack, bring that.  If not, just bring a backpack with rain gear, a jacket, a healthy snack if you like, water, and bug spray.

Sun 9/8/19 Hunter Ed: Please see 8/20/19 email  for details on how to register, pay, and take the online preparatory class, then attend the practical in-person training.

Fri-Sun Oct 11-13 Wing Conference:   On Friday evening beginning at 6:30pm, we will have a Combat Dining Out at Polaris Squadron.  All day Saturday will consist of classes and activities for cadets & Senior Members at the UAA Aviation Technology Division, including a panel of graduates from the service academies (Air Force Academy, Annapolis, West Point, Coast Guard Academy & Merchant Marine Academy)

To register for Wing Conference, cadets need completed CAPF 60-80 and CAPF 161 (google them : -)), then cadets & Senior Members can register & upload the forms at  https://akwgcivilairpatrol.regfox.com/2019-akwg-conference-awards-banquet.  Definitely sign up for the Combat Dining Out ($5) and the Saturday Conference (no cost).  We are hoping there's a way to attend the Awards Banquet without having to pay for the $40-60 dinner, so if you don't register for the awards banquet yet, that's totally OK.

CAP Gmail: Just checking to see if you're still reading. If you are serious about CAP and plan to stay in for a while, please activate your CAP Google/Gmail account and install the Gmail app on your phone (it wont work with your native email app).  Go to http://goo.gl/WkgkQe   A temporary password will be emailed or texted to you.  Go to gmail.com.  Login using <YOUR CAPID>@akwg.cap.gov and the temporary password.  Then customize your account using your own password.  A lot of CAP information is sent to everyone's CAP Gmail address, whether or not they have activated it. As you move up in the ranks, you will find that a lot of information is shared in Google Docs and on Google Drive, and you will only be able to access it with your CAP Google account.

March 2020 Alaska Cadet Competition/April 2020 Regional Cadet Competition in Alaska: If enough of you express interest in forming a cadet competition team, we will find out what it would take, and the cadets can determine if they want to do that.  Ask your colleagues in other squadrons what they have done.  There is a little information here: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/activities/national-cadet-competition/ncc-competitor-information

Oregon Winter Encampment 12/28/19-1/4/20: Did you already attend encampment and now you want to attend an Advanced Training Squadron? Are you excited to attend basic encampment now that you're hearing so many cadets talking about it?  Keep your eyes on this website for more information.  Registration opens 9/1/19! https://sites.google.com/a/wawg.cap.gov/winter-raptor-encampment/

June 2020 Alaska Encampment: Alaska plans to host another Encampment this coming summer--Arctic Challenge V!! We will keep you posted as we determine dates and other details.
