Lake Hood Cadet Squadron (PCR-AK-093)   15 July 2020

By SSgt. Katherine LeBlanc, Cadet Public Affairs NCO

This month’s PT meeting started with a safety briefing by C/MSgt Compton. This included a reminder to be aware of your surroundings when exercising outdoors, and to be cautious around wild animals. Four Lake Hood cadets attended an online cyber camp hosted by the Colorado Wing. They started camp everyday at 6 AM for a week to advance their cyber education. These cadets learned, among many things, how to protect their computers, and virtualize computers on their own to learn functions. After the cyber camp recap, C/MSgt Schuler led the squadron in another virtual workout.

Phase 2 means cadets are able to get back up in the air! C/Amn Nathan Northcutt & C/SMSgt Adler are briefed by Capt Ben Padgett & Lt Col James McCarthy before glider orientation flights.

On June 23rd Lake Hood had their character development and awards ceremony. The meeting began with Lt Padgett hosting a discussion on respectful disagreement. Cadets talked about times they had a disagreement with someone and remained friends. The discussion also had an example of a disagreement by Capt Griffing and Lt Padgett, allowing cadets to determine what is and is not respectful. Cadets then participated in a Kahoot on respect. Capt Griffing proceeded to go over awards and promotions with a slideshow.

June included a 5th meeting for the month, and moving into Phase 2 allowed an in person weekly meeting for Lake Hood. Cadets met in person, geared in face masks and PT, ready for some fun games. Cadets were able to do opening formation, at double arm's length, in person again. This gave them the opportunity to catch up on drill instructions and tests. Cadets participated in encampment prep in the form of uniform relays, memory work, and fun games with PT.

Cadets spent the July 7th meeting working on emergency services. It was started with flight time, allowing cadets to work on drill. It moved on going back to the basics, and working on compass use, map reading, and GES-116 test for new cadets. After a short break cadets got to work on a simulated missing person search using triangulation.

July 14th will be Aerospace Education outreach! To keep the “bubble” small, this month’s aerospace outreach is open to younger siblings.  Through fun flying remote control airplanes and small drones, Lake Hood Squadron will be showing our future cadets how interesting aerospace can be.

Stay tuned next month of an update on our Aerospace Outreach, and for new ideas for conducting CAP activities while socially distancing and staying in touch with cadets not attending in-person meetings!
