6/21/20 Lake Hood Update

June 21, 2020

For More Information:

Happy Father's Day!

And Lake Hood Hello Cadets, Parents & Senior Members,

As always, we have lots of exciting news!

First off, congratulations to Cadets Gillam, Halliburton K, Mellerstig & Patterson on completing the AFA Standard CyberCamp last week! Please let us know Tuesday your favorite parts, what was most challenging, how you see using the information you learned going forward, and anything else interesting you want to tell us!  Cadets may have another opportunity this summer for a Standard CyberCamp and for an Advanced CyberCamp July 20-24.  We'll know more on July 1st.

This Tuesday, 6/23/20, we will still meet virtually, 6;30-8pm on Google Meet (code aak-zpnn-ajn).  The topics are Character Development and Awards/Promotions Ceremony. To prepare for Character Development, please think of a time you have disagreed with a friend about something that was important to you and you remained friends.  Also think of ways people can show respect even while disagreeing with someone. I'll be calling on cadets and senior members to contribute to the conversation.

Encampment is still planned for Sun-Sat, August 9-15, 2020 at JBER for students and ATF.  Staff/cadre will report early (Fri or Sat Aug 7 or 8, depending on your assignment).

Next Tuesday, 6/30/20, we will meet IN PERSON (assuming we are still in Phase 2, or maybe even Phase 3 of remobilization).  That is a 5th Tuesday, so we don't have a regularly-planned meeting topic.  Please suggest activities to either C/Capt Padgett or to C/CMSgt Dupras.  Let's plan to meet outdoors at Wendler Middle School 6:30-9pm.  We'll still ask the screening questions (temp <100.4? any COVID symptoms? Any contact with COVID patients in the last 2 weeks? Any travel outside Alaska in the last 2 weeks?)

AWESOME 1ST AID OPPORTUNITY: Please see below or here (https://lakehood.cap.gov/news/hawk-mountain-ranger-school-online-july-10-19-2020) for an amazing online opportunity with Hawk Mountain Ranger School.  July 10-19, 2020, We can all make major headway toward our next Ground Team (Emergency Services) ratings from the comfort of our homes.

If you have not taken 1st Aid, or yours will expire in the next year or so, please register for online 1st Aid with the Hawk Mountain folks.  It is VERY difficult to get 1st Aid training right now because COVID healthcare workers have priority.  If the $25 fee is an issue for you, please contact me privately.  You can take it 3-5pm AK time Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue July 11-14 OR 6am-2pm AK time Saturday July 18.

To start registration, complete this short form asking for your CAPID & contact info...https://www.capranger.org/distance-learning

[Info also provided below: NASAR Basic Wilderness First Aid | Virtual ($25) | Two sessions:  11-14 July 2020 (1900-2100 Eastern) or 18 July 2020 (1000-1800 Eastern) - Certified HMRS Medical staff will conduct two sessions of National Association for Search and Rescue's Basic Wilderness First Aid.  This course meets requirements for both GTM3, Ranger Third Class, and NASAR's Search and Rescue Technician 2. ]

In addition, you can do a lot of the academic work for all Ground Team levels.  See "Basic/Advanced Ranger Courses" highlighted in yellow below.  The Ranger Levels correspond roughly to the Ground Team levels.  There are no prerequisites for this training.

WING CONFERENCE:  The Alaska Wing (State-Wide) Conference is planned for October 2-4 (Fri/Sat/Sun), 2020 in Anchorage.  The current plan is to spend all day Saturday, Oct 3 at the UAA Aviation Division participating in lots of great training sessions, discussions, and update meetings, getting to know folks from all over Alaska.  Lake Hood Squadron has 2 special opportunities

(1) We just got permission to provide breakfast & lunch food and drinks as a fundraiser for our Squadron.  Start thinking of individually-wrapped, yummy healthy items we can buy economically and sell at a reasonable markup to attendees at the conference.  Many out-of-town attendees will not have vehicles and will not want to take the time to drive to a nearby restaurant, so they will appreciate the convenience of having food there for purchase.

(2) Lake Hood Squadron will be setting up and tearing down all the furniture, decorations, etc for before and after the Saturday evening banquet.  The banquet is currently planned for Arctic Warrior Events Center on JBER, where we had cadet competition in February.  Banquet costs should be much lower than last year, so hopefully we can all attend.
